Not all driveway salt is the same. And if you've ever had to break up a frozen bag of rock salt or walk across an icy patch that should’ve melted by now, you already know the difference.
At T.A.P Landscaping, we use and deliver magnesium chloride-treated salt for a reason. It works faster, sticks where you put it, and helps protect the surface of your driveway—especially interlock and concrete.
The SaltDogg ready to spread magnesium chloride for a commercial property in Durham Region.
Rock salt is made from sodium chloride, and it's been the standard for decades. It’s inexpensive, widely available, and melts snow and ice well at moderate temperatures.
Magnesium chloride is different. It’s more refined, comes in smaller pellets or flakes, and often has better performance—especially in cold or dry conditions. It also draws in moisture from the air more effectively, so it starts melting sooner.
It starts working faster.
Magnesium chloride creates brine almost immediately, while dry rock salt needs moisture to get started. In cold, dry weather, that delay can mean a slippery surface for longer.
2. It’s gentler on your driveway.
Magnesium chloride is less corrosive than sodium chloride. It’s safer for interlock, poured concrete, and newer driveways that are still curing.
3. It stays where you put it.
Rock salt tends to scatter or bounce when applied. Our magnesium chloride-treated salt is slightly pre-wet, which helps it stick to your surface rather than ending up in your lawn, garden beds, or the road.
4. It works at lower temperatures.
Rock salt is mostly effective down to -7°C. Magnesium chloride keeps working closer to -15°C or below. That means fewer reapplications when the deep freeze hits.
Because magnesium chloride works faster and stays in place, you often need less of it to get the same results. It’s especially helpful in shaded areas, sloped driveways, and walkways that tend to refreeze quickly.
We deliver our product in sealed, stackable buckets that keep moisture out and scooping easy—even in a storm. And if you’ve already got a T.A.P bucket from last season, we’ll refill it for you.
Treated salt isn’t just more effective. It’s also in higher demand. Between supply chain pressures and tighter restrictions on public salt use in Ontario, raw material prices are rising, and municipal stockpiles are driving up demand.
But with magnesium chloride, you’re buying a product that works better with fewer reapplications and less surface damage long-term.
We deliver treated salt buckets throughout Durham Region and can schedule refills as needed during the season.
