Not every slope needs a retaining wall. But some slopes absolutely do — and the difference between addressing it properly and ignoring it can mean the difference between a stable yard and one that's slowly moving toward your house.
If you've been looking at a sloped or uneven section of your property and wondering whether it needs attention, here's how to think through it.

A retaining wall holds back soil. That's its job. When a slope exists — whether from natural topography, grading done during construction, or changes made to a neighbouring property — the soil on that slope is under pressure. Gravity is pulling it downhill constantly, and water moving through it after rainfall accelerates that movement.
A properly built retaining wall intercepts that pressure and transfers it into the ground through its own structure and foundation. Done right, it stabilizes the slope permanently. Done wrong, or not done when it should have been, the soil continues to move — slowly at first, then faster as the problem compounds.
The clearest sign is visible movement. If you can see soil washing downhill after heavy rain, if your lawn has developed an obvious lean or slump, or if a garden bed is gradually sliding toward a lower part of the yard, the slope is moving and something needs to address it.
Less obvious signs are worth paying attention to too. Soil consistently washing onto a lower patio, walkway, or neighbour's property after rain indicates the slope isn't stable. A fence that has started leaning or posts that are visibly shifting can signal soil movement beneath the surface. Cracks appearing in a lower retaining structure or foundation wall can indicate pressure building from a slope above.
In older Durham Region neighbourhoods, retaining walls that were built without proper drainage behind them are a common problem. Over years of Ontario winters, water has nowhere to go, freezes, expands, and the wall starts to bow or lean. At that point the wall needs to be rebuilt properly rather than patched.
A gentle slope that drains well and holds its grass isn't necessarily a problem. Not every grade change requires a wall — sometimes proper regrading, good sod establishment, or strategic planting is enough to stabilize a slope and manage water movement.
The threshold where a retaining wall typically becomes necessary is roughly a slope of 3:1 or steeper — meaning for every three horizontal feet, the ground rises one vertical foot. Steeper than that and the soil is under enough pressure that surface solutions alone are unlikely to hold long-term.
If you're unsure which category your slope falls into, the safest approach is having someone assess it before investing in either a wall or alternative solutions that might not be sufficient.
Not all retaining walls are built the same way, and the right type depends on the height of the wall, the soil conditions, and what's above and below it.
Segmental retaining wall blocks are the most common choice for residential properties in Durham Region. They're modular, relatively straightforward to install properly, and handle the freeze-thaw cycle well when built with adequate drainage behind them. They work well for walls up to about four feet in height.
Natural stone walls have a place in certain settings, particularly in older established neighbourhoods where the aesthetic fits. They require skilled installation to be stable long-term and are generally not the right choice for walls holding significant amounts of soil.
Taller walls — anything approaching or exceeding four feet — typically require engineering input and may need permits depending on your municipality. This isn't a reason to avoid them, but it's part of the planning process that needs to happen before the work starts.
The base is where most retaining wall failures start, and it's the part that's invisible once the job is done.
A proper retaining wall needs an excavated and compacted base below the frost line — in Durham Region that means going deep enough that freeze-thaw movement in the soil beneath the wall doesn't cause it to shift or heave over time. The wall needs batter, meaning it leans slightly back into the slope rather than sitting perfectly vertical, which is how the structure handles the pressure of the soil behind it.
Behind the wall, drainage is not optional. Granular backfill — not native soil — goes directly behind the wall, often with a perforated drain pipe at the base that moves water away from the structure. Water that builds up behind a retaining wall is the single most common cause of wall failure. It adds enormous pressure to the structure and, in Ontario winters, it freezes and expands against the wall repeatedly.
Geogrid reinforcement is used in taller walls to tie the wall structure back into the slope at regular intervals, distributing the load across a wider area rather than having the wall face absorb all of it.
Each of these elements matters. A wall that looks right from the front but was built without proper drainage or base preparation will fail eventually — sometimes within a few seasons in Ontario's climate.
A wall that is visibly leaning, has sections that are bowing outward, or has started to separate at the joints is telling you the drainage or base has failed. Pushing individual blocks back into place is a temporary measure at best.
The right approach depends on how far along the failure is. A wall that has shifted slightly and caught early can sometimes be rebuilt in sections with the drainage corrected. A wall that has moved significantly, or where the soil behind it has already started to slump, typically needs to come down and be rebuilt from the base properly.
Neither of those is a small job, which is why addressing drainage issues and base failures early — before they compound through additional freeze-thaw cycles — is always the better outcome.
A retaining wall is the right solution when a slope is too steep to stabilize with grading or planting alone, when soil is visibly moving, or when an existing wall has failed and needs to be rebuilt properly. When it's the right solution, it needs to be built with a proper base, adequate drainage, and materials suited to Ontario's climate.
A wall that checks those boxes will outlast the property it's on. One that doesn't will be back on your radar within a few winters.
